We’re going back to an imagined holiday from two centuries ago, one with a bit of playful anachronism and lots of holiday flavor. Aged spirits, gin or vodka, and port are the stars of the show, along with a spiced port-and-dried-fruit syrup you’ll make ahead that’s Christmas in a jar. (I call it “Yuletide syrup”!) “BARNSTABLE PUNCH” IS A VERY TASTY SPARKLING CUP OF CHEER. NAMED AFTER THE COUNTY ON CAPE COD THAT ONCE PRODUCED LOTS OF CRANBERRIES, THIS ONE COMBINES GIN OR VODKA WITH OUR YULETIDE SYRUP, LIME JUICE, AND MUDDLED CRANBERRY, TOPPED OFF WITH YOUR CHOICE OF SPICY GINGER BEER OR DRY SPARKLING WINE AND GARNISHED WITH HOMEMADE SUGARED CRANBERRIES.
THE “CARDINAL COCKTAIL,” WITH ITS LOVELY REDDISH HUE IS A SMALL TRIBUTE TO MY FAVORITE BIRD, ONE THAT STICKS AROUND IN NEW ENGLAND THROUGH THE SNOWY WINTERS AND CHEERS US DURING THE HOLIDAYS. THIS DRINK WILL PLEASE LOVERS OF SPIRIT-FORWARD COCKTAILS, AS IT SITS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN A MANHATTAN AND AN OLD-FASHIONED, COMBINING AGED SPIRIT (WHISKEY, RUM OR COGNAC), PORT, YULETIDE SYRUP AND BITTERS, WITH AN ORANGE TWIST AND FRESH NUTMEG ATOP.
INDIVIDUAL SERVINGS OF EGGNOG WERE A COMMON ORDER IN TAVERNS AND BARS THROUGH THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. OUR “RUBY EGGNOG” COMBINES AGED SPIRIT (WHISKEY, RUM OR COGNAC) WITH PORT, HALF AND HALF, A WHOLE EGG AND OUR YULETIDE SYRUP, ALL TOPPED WITH FRESHLY GRATED NUTMEG.
